How to use social media sites like twitter to drive traffic

Social media is everywhere these days and is increasingly
being used to drive organic traffic to websites and online businesses.

Social media is one of the most powerful methods of getting free organic
website traffic that exists today.

Site like Youtube and facebook are priceless resources that can be exploit for marketing online and because there are
millions of subscribers and thousands of Like minded groups on these sites, the possibilities are endless.

Most people tend to stick with thier friends lists they create on facebook, YouTube being video based takes more work and is generally utilisedby those more akin to budding movie directors or people who share a particular passion, as well as marketing professionals promoting their businesses.
But there are lots more of these sites out there and they are growing at an exponential rate.

Social media sites as far as marketing goes are just sensational. The explosionof the social media site has been going on now for around 4 years and has beenso dramatic that most social media website are getting visitors numbers in the hundreds of Millions every day.

That essentially means that these sites get more visitors per day than some of the more established bricks and morter companiessuch as CNN or the New York times.

Companies that have been around for decades or more with established credentials that are getting lessthan 5% of the traffic from social media sites that upstart newbies like Facebook, myspace, Bebo or even twitter.

So this shows the extent of the exposure that your product could get if you use these social media sites correctly.

Now Twitter is perhaps the most overlooked of the social media sites and as we progress through 2009 we are going to see a remarkable change of fortunes for this often misunderstood fledgling web presence.

Now Twitter is a very simple concept of telling the world the answer to a single question.

“What are you doing now”

Whilst this is in appearance very limiting it is also very liberating. Twitter is in essence microblogging and like blogging in general it is useful for contact purposes and to generate a following. It is also used to create relationships and partnerships and to just link up in general with like minded people who share your business niche or interest. However bizzare wierd or strange that may be.

Because it limits your post length to 140 characters you don’t have to agonise for hours about the message or Post that you upload. Its quick, easy and sweet.
No information overload and no cliched sales pitch, with the exception perhaps of your website address at the end of your post. Bearing in mind of course that 140 Characters would take up an aweful lot of most peoples website URL’s.

The surest way to determine the likelyhood of a social media sites survival is the plethora of scripts and widgets that appear on the Market that link one social media site to another.

In just the last few days I have recieved notifications of several new WordPress plugins that link Twitter to everything from a social media network to plugins that post to Twitter when someone uploads a blog post.

If people are going to the trouble to figure out ways to Monitize Twitter then you may as well climb aboard for the ride and try to capitalise as best you can for your business during the rest of 2009.

It firmly believe that during 2009 Twitter will become one of the most useful and powerful free advertising tools available for online marketing

Just how long this lasts is open to debate, but I for one confess that I will be making ever effort to monitize my sites with Twitter in mind and you should do the same.
