Productivity: How To Manage Your Productivity to maximise Profit.
Motivation is a human trait we all suffer from. What motivates us depends on the place in our life that we have reached. How we stay motivated depends often enough on factors of our life that we place more value in for one reason or another.
Now here is an example from Robert Plank
If I could go back in time to when I started internet marketing, If i could tell myself one thing, it would be this: “put 100% of your effort into getting a car before anyone else does, so you can get chicks!”
So by Roberts measure you are far more productive if you focus on a single goal, with an known objective. In this case the goal is to buy a car before his friends and his objective is to get the girl, the reasons I will leave to your imagination.
This is also a real life example of someones motivation fully exposed. We do this type of thing almost daily in one small aspect or another often without thinking.
Now motivation is a personal thing. In order to stay motivated and therefore productive it is necessary to focus our attention and therefore our effort on a few things that we percieve will bring the quickest results that match our desires.
However in life we also believe we can do more than we actually can. We “Multi-task” which means we do several things at once which is not an efficient way of doing things. The result is often less than it could have been.
So to be productive in our marketing effort it is ESSENTIAL that you follow the simple rule of 1: Only concentrate on ONE thing at a time.
Clear your desk of distractions, put the phone on answer machine turn off the television and throw the newspaper in the trash. Its time for work and work means money. You should never mix Business with pleasure and you should Focus on each task 100%. Even if that task takes just 10 minutes which most simple tasks do. Writing that blog post, making a quick video, putting together that email or whatever. 10 minutes of uninterrupted effort and its done.
So in order to be productive follow these simple tips and things willl get easier:
Finish everything that you start
O.K we all start something with the best intentions in the world. And then we get distracted and its left unfinished. However lets look at this from an example point of view.
You are writting a blog post which you complete to the 90% point. BUT you are unable to finish that because you failed to fully complete the reseach for the post. Which means that instead of one incomplete task you now have two. And then three and so on.
Finish one task before you move to another. Then you are always ready in all respects to move forward.
Use the 60 second rule.
Apply the 60 second rule to every decision that you make. This rule is very simple: Never take longer than 60 seconds to make a decision. Its hard at first because you make decisions that are in haste (act in haste repent at Leisure). But the more decisions you make the smarter you become at making the right one. Try it for yourself and see what I mean.
Close out those distractions.
Busy,Busy, Busy. Your “to do list” should be scheduled like the vision in your head. So apply that clean mental vision to your actual list. Check e-mail twice a day, remember finish everything that you start. So trash every e-mail thats irrelevent, answer those that are important and leave your inbox for Pending issues only. Set up Google alerts for information gathering using keyword analogy, saves time and stops you aimlessly wandering the cyber forums looking for the stuff you need. If you visit forums do so for just 10 – 15 minutes and this stops you getting sucked right in.
Time stamp your list
apply a timer to your “to do list” to keep you on track. I use cool timer myself which is great free tool that you set directly on your desk top and it even has an alarm to remind you of its presence. So efficiency can be managed if you know how.
So to recap:
Apply the rule of 1 and the 60 second rule.
Use a clean desk policy when you begin to work.
Time stamp your list and finish what you started.
Use these simple effective methods to really make your day productive and profitable.
